With over 50 million active users, Cash App is definitely one of the payment services you'll want to use for your payment or money transfer needs.

Talking of money transfer, Cash App allows you to use many types of cards for this purpose, including some gift cards, and if you're looking to send money from your gift card to Cash App, I've compiled all the steps you need to take to make the transfer possible.

Does Cash App Accept Gift Cards?

Yes, Cash App accepts gift cards, but their support for these cards isn't as you'd think.

Cash App will only support a gift card that was originally sent to you through the app. This support includes storing, spending, and managing the gift card on Cash App.

In fact, Cash App officially confirms this through a Reddit thread, and in their words:

You can only store, spend and manage gift cards that were originally sent within Cash App. Any gift card sent externally, including physical gift cards, cannot be linked, managed, or spent in your app.

As you can see from the screenshot below, this was officially confirmed by CashAppAndi, Cash App's Reddit moderator.

Cash App won't accept or allow you to link, spend, or manage gift cards that were sent out of the app, including physical gift cards.

So if you're looking to link a physical gift card to Cash App, you'll have fewer chances to succeed.

How to Transfer Money from Gift Card to Cash App

As earlier mentioned, Cash App will only allow you to transfer money from a gift card that was sent within the app. So if your gift card was sent externally, it'd be difficult to use it with Cash App—but I'll still show you how to transfer funds from it to the app later in this guide.

Before trying to link a gift card to Cash App, you'll need to make sure that you've already linked a debit card to your account, or else you won't be able to link your gift card.

If your gift card was sent through Cash App, you can follow the steps below to transfer money from the gift card to Cash App:

  1. Open Cash App and tap on your profile icon.
  2. Scroll until you see "Linked Banks" and tap on it.
  3. If you've already linked a debit card to your account, you should see Link Credit Card or still Linked Debit Card. Just click on it because it wouldn't be a problem as long as you have a debit card linked already.
  4. Enter your gift card details, including the card number, expiry date, CVV, and ZIP code.
  5. Once you're done with that, tap "Link Card" to link your gift card to the app.

As I said, it doesn't matter whether you see Link Credit Card or Link Debit Card. As long as you've already linked a debit card to Cash App, you should be able to link either a credit, prepaid, or supported gift card.

After linking your gift card to Cash App, you should be able to start sending money to any other Cash App user.

To do so:

  1. Open Cash App on your phone.
  2. Enter the amount you want to send.
  3. Tap "Pay."
  4. Enter an email address, phone number, or $cashtag.
  5. Enter what the payment is for.
  6. Finally, tap "Pay."

Now, you need to know that you can't send money from your linked gift card to your Cash App balance. You can only use it as a funding source for your transfers through the app.

How to Send Money from an Unsupported Gift Card to Cash App

Cash App supports only a few gift cards, and for the ton of other gift cards they don't support, you'll only have to rely on indirect methods if you need to transfer funds to your Cash App balance.

So to transfer money from an unsupported gift card to Cash App, you'll need to follow these steps:

1. List the Gift Card on an Exchange Platform

There are many gift card exchanges that will let you list your gift card for sale. Exchanges like Raise, CardCash, and GiftCardGranny are some of the best options you can find out there with good rates.

When listing, you'll be asked to choose your preferred payout method, and you'll see options like PayPal, bank, Bitcoin, or even Cash App for some exchanges.

If you chose Cash App as a direct payout method, you won't have to take the next steps, but if you chose an option like Bank Transfer, then you can follow on with the steps.

You can even list your gift card for sale on marketplaces like Facebook Marketplace.

Even if you don't want to go through these exchanges, you can still propose them to a friend at a considerable rate that they'll like and get instant cash from them.

2. Request Payout After Selling Your Gift Card

Some gift card exchanges will directly pay you into your payout method. However, if you're dealing with a platform that doesn't automatically issue payouts, then you'll have to request the payout to your preferred method.

If Cash App isn't listed as a direct payout method, I recommend you choose bank transfer, since it is easy to add money to Cash App from your bank account rather than transferring from PayPal.

3. Add the Proceeds to Your Cash App Balance

After requesting a payout to your bank, it should take a few days to reflect in your account, depending on the bank network and holidays that can influence the transfer.

Once the payment reflects in your bank account, you can easily add it to your Cash App balance.

To do so:

  1. Tap the Money tab on your Cash App home screen.
  2. Press "Add money."
  3. Choose an amount or enter an amount of your choice.
  4. Tap "Add."
  5. Use Touch ID or enter your PIN to confirm.

Before taking the steps above, you'll need to make sure that you've linked that bank account to Cash App to streamline the process.

And there you go! You've just transferred money from your unsupported gift card to your Cash App balance.

How Long Does It Take To Transfer Money from a Gift Card to Cash App?

If your gift card is supported by Cash App, it should take just a few minutes (if not seconds) to link it to the app and start transferring money.

However, if you're dealing with an unsupported gift card, the process can take up to 5 business days, depending on the payout option you choose and factors that influence the bank transfer timeline.

Does Cash App Accept Visa Gift Cards?

Yes, Cash App will support your Visa gift card if and only if it was sent through the Cash App mobile app.

Can I Transfer Money from Cash App to a Gift Card?

No, you cannot transfer (or let me say withdraw) money from your Cash App balance to a linked gift card, even if it is supported by the app.

Final Thoughts

Cash App's support for gift cards isn't as flexible as for other cards, like credit or debit cards.

That said, if you have a gift card and want to link it to the app to transfer money, it'd only be possible if your gift card was sent through the Cash App mobile app. Any other gift card won't be supported, even physical gift cards.

This guide compiles the steps to transfer your gift card balance to Cash App, and even if you're using an unsupported gift card, I've also mentioned the steps you need to take.
